I have often wondered why the conception, design and construction of this monument was such a gratifying experience, and I believe I have finally found the answer. It was such a gratifying experience because it was a joint-venture creation that played out extremely well. And it did because since its inception, it was inspired by the personality and charisma of the person who is the object of this tribute. Without this inspiration, which overwhelmed each and every one of the participants, it would have been difficult to finish the project on time, and incorporate so many architectural elements into this breathtaking landscape. Carlos Madrigal, a metallic structures contractor from San José; Héctor Roses, concrete works contractor from Pocora; Carlos Hernández, in charge of coordination on behalf of EARTH (School of Agriculture of the Tropical Humid Region, by its Spanish acronym); and the Memorial Committee steered by José Zaglul, rector of EARTH, all worked under this inspiring vision of service, which we believe is an example of Jorge Manuel Dengo’s prolific life. The poetry of water, emerging both accelerated and vital, rushing through the channels and cascading downward to the peaceful pond full of stones and then to the reflection pond, was incorporated into this monument as evocative elements. The roof covering the structure like a giant leaf is another crucial element of this work of art. It is evident that this amazing machine, whose practical use is rendered obsolete today, but was rescued for its historical and aesthetic values, and for the appeal of its powerful plastic presence, constitutes the core of this work. This turbine is a machine that transcends its function, since it stands for strength, energy, and vitality. These, as we all know, are the traits of great leaders, but they are also an example for young people, represented by the students. We tried to create a monument that would evoke, with these elements, the public life of this great man, Jorge Manuel Dengo. Gaining respect and spreading affection are two attributes that are abundantly present only in great men.
