Ten years after concluding the construction of phase one of the Plaza Mayor shopping center, the contiguous lot was purchased to build the expansion thereof. I accepted to design a project that would be the continuation of phase one, but in search of an evolution. Something along the lines of considering the first as the tradition of the second. This time the project was far more complex, since it was to incorporate two floors meant for offices. I selected the same materials
and colors, while at the urban level, sought the spatial integration of both buildings.
Functionally speaking, a pedestrian bridge would ensure the unity between both areas. The park toward the North was taken advantage of as an excellent view as well as source of lighting, both for the offices and the commercial common areas. The two office floors boast courtyards with skylights and trees that provide meeting areas, plus a second façade, lit naturally, for the offices. Both buildings, in addition to the character offered by the roofs, formally interrelated, feature a continuance in the materials.
I used the most commonplace and inexpensive materials possible for their natural appearance, avoiding painted surfaces, thereby lowering maintenance and operating costs. Large eaves cover the façades, leaving the apertures under shade and protected from the sun.
