This project is part of the owners´ adventure who decided to rebuild their lodge, which is accessible sailing through the Pacuare River in the tropical rainforest of Costa Rica, or by a cable of 150 meters long -stretched between trees and extended over the river.
These access conditions led us propose a project of buildings made with lighter pieces which can be assemble on the property by local workers. For this reason we chose bamboo for the structure and walls and Asterogyne martiana palms for the roofs. Both materials are found near the project.
The cabins are lifted of the ground and their main structure is a thin bamboo web with a slight curvature which forms a basket and it’s tied up with lianas at the junctions. The roof is made up of thin reeds to tighten up the Asterogyne martiana palms. The whole ensemble has double inclination.
The comfort is assured by the shade of the existent forest and the absence of barriers on the walls that allow for crossed ventilation. The handmade weaved walls, avoid the income of bigger animals and the mosquito nets protect from the insects. All this, inspired by pre-Columbian constructions, which is still practiced in the huts by the Cabécar Indians of the area.
The river that borders the property is an essential element of the project, since it provides access to the lodge and economic returns through white - water rafting tours. The pier is the focal point and the elevated boulevard parallel to the river, with sightseeing spots towards the mountain and the river, are of the very best interest and attraction. The canopy, with aerial cables between the trees, completes the experience.
