Located in Valle de La Estrella, Costa Rica, latitude 9.25 North, longitude 83.00 West, altitude 60 m.a.s.l., this project is meant for construction in the Costa Rican banana regions and is designed to lodge 24 bachelor farm hands who work at the banana farms, to be built in the flatter, hotter areas of the country. In order to implement a design adapted to such conditions, we resorted to the fluid mechanics to determine the shape of the roof, aimed at accelerating the passage of air. The curving roofline has an advantage over the gable roof: it eliminates turbulence, which allows for a better drawing of air toward the interior. In this case, as can be seen, a curved roof was designed with a continuous asymmetric monitor. In this specific case, this orientation is meant to have the building face the prevailing winds.

The curved roofline solution causes the air to slide without producing low-pressure zones, making the roof’s sweep more efficient, while at the same time accelerating the air’s suction toward the interior, thereby lowering the temperature. It can be observed that if the air entry angle is modified, the effect is lessened, since a turbulence zone is created at the exit.

With the intention of making air circulation more efficient in order to lower the temperature and humidity, this edifice has latticed walls; i.e., there are openings at the overlapping points of the sheets, so that the accelerated and fresher air passes through the entire height of the wall. The windows have no glass, rather there is a mosquito netting covering all apertures. The graphs indicating shadows projected by the roof on the building show the good performance of this solution. The effect of the shadows can be seen on the long façades.
